COMMUNITY MAPPING
WHAT IS COMMUNITY MAPPING?
The United Way of Alberta Capital Region and the City of Edmonton are funding community mapping as a method of enhancing partnerships. Community mapping is the process of depicting visually what is happening in a given community. There are five (5) phases in the community mapping process.
  • Joint Commitment: members agree on a common purpose; boundaries are defined and agreement is reached on what the group wishes to accomplish together
  • Creating Community Profile: information is gathered about the community; the information is mapped and; the maps are supplemented with narratives
  • Community Engagement: others are invited to review the community profile created; as agreed, the profile is revised and/or enhanced; community needs, strengths, gaps and resources are identified and; an action plan is created
  • Action: the action plan is implemented
  • Reflection: successes and challenges in working together are identified and documented; successes and challenges in achieving expected outcomes are identified and documented. And the cycle starts again with a discussion regarding ongoing joint committment to planning together
WHAT ARE LOCAL AREA NETWORKS (LAN)?
A Local Area Network (LAN) is a group of human service providers, working in a defined geographical area, who are committed to working collaboratively. Each LAN progresses differently in their development and in order to track the process each LAN undertakes to improve service delivery to children and families within their community, we create a LAN profile. As part of their process, some LAN's have produced a community resource directory.

Below is a listing of the LAN's working within the Alberta Capital Region. You may view profiles, resource directories and over 500 maps by going to the Local Area Networks tab.
