Social Atlas of City of Edmonton

Mapping and Planning Support (M.A.P.S.) Alberta Capital Region is pleased to provide this Social Atlas of the City of Edmonton. M.A.P.S. has been working with local area networks of human service providers for more than 6 years and this City of Edmonton social profile has evolved from that work. This profile is a work in process. It is continuously being evolved as colleagues use it.

The Community Mapping & Collaborative Planning Process which has been developed by local area networks is articulated in the diagram and descriptor. The software utilized in creating these maps is ArcGIS Desktop 9.3. The sources of data used are Statistics Canada 2006 Census, City of Edmonton 2009 Municipal Census, 211 and program information from the members of the local area networks.

The benefits realized through our community mapping and collaborative planning process are:
  1. Participants are more informed about their community.
  2. A shared understanding of the needs and strengths of the community exists.
  3. Assumptions about their community are verified or challenged.
  4. Mapping provides the foundation for collective decision making and planning.
  5. A strong tool that coordinates a shared vision.
  6. Mapping provides a foundation for collaborative efforts.
Our hope is that maps and the community mapping and planning process will continue to be used as a collaborative planning and development tool in human services and other areas of community development.
